My CFE journey – Mission accomplished
A little over six months ago, I embarked on my journey to become a Certified Fraud Examiner, and I’m happy to announce that I’ve reached my goal. During the last week of August, I completed my application and all four sections of the exam. It took just a few days to learn that I passed, and my application was approved by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
What does this mean for me?
The CFE credential, definitely adds to my knowledge base and credibility as a private investigator specializing in preventing fraud through due diligence. I’m now part of an incredible network of talented fraud professionals, which adds value to my investigative practice. Beyond that, I’m not sure. I’ll keep learning – CFEs complete 20 hours of continuing education each year. I’ll keep meeting other CFEs, too, and I’m looking forward to attending my first COCFE Fraud Conference as a CFE next month in Arvada, Colorado.
What did I learn through this process?
I learned that – even with all the hours of study – I was never bored. Did some sections frustrate me and require more time than others? Definitely. But I was always excited to start a new study session and never doubted this path.
I learned that I missed social media when I had to take a break in order to focus. Say what you will about the politics and sappy quotes, I missed catching up with friends, family, and colleagues and would steal an occasional glimpse to feel more connected.
I learned about the power of focus. There’s never a good time to take on such a big commitment. Clients will continue calling, volunteer commitments don’t end, and family needs always take priority. Once you decide on a serious goal and time frame, though, it’s easy to filter out the distractions. If you haven’t read the 12-Week Year, I highly recommend this book. It helped me get through this journey without neglecting my highest priorities.
Finally, I learned that I’ll never stop learning. It’s not just the initials after your name or certificate hanging on the wall. It’s about how the experience changes you and and the work you do for others. The more I can learn about protecting my clients from fraudsters, the better. I look forward to the many opportunities for more specialized training in fraud prevention and mitigation.
So, it’s mission accomplished, and I’m blogging again on a regular basis. It’s good to be back! Now to start working on my “Post-CFE to-do list.”
